iPhone Users Are Reporting Old Photos Resurfacing After iOS Update

There’s a bug on the new iOS that’s bringing back old photos. After Monday’s update, people reported the apparent bug saying that they’re seeing old photos, some deleted years ago, appear in their Recents album. Apple hasn’t commented on the complaints yet.

 

“Phubbing” Can Torpedo Your Relationship

If you’re “phubbing” in bed, you’re hurting your relationship. Phubbing is a combination of the words phone and snubbing, and it’s when someone is ignoring you and paying more attention to their mobile device. Doing that in bed with your partner is not healthy, according to experts. Experts add that by focusing on your phone instead of your SO, there’s much less intimacy and resentment can creep in. Leave the phone on the nightstand and all should be well.

 

AAA: Memorial Day Travel Will Be The Busiest In Two Decades

Memorial Day weekend could be the busiest in 20 years. AAA says 43.8-million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles for the holiday. There’s also expected to be a nearly 5-percent bump in airline travel over last year. As far as roadtrips, 38.4-million will be hopping on the highways. Experts think the reason for the bump in numbers is because people want to be more adventurous.

 

Department Of Justice Releases Proposed Rule To Reclassify Marijuana

The Biden administration took the next step in its plan to reclassify marijuana yesterday. The Justice Department submitted the change to the Office of the Federal Register and now there’s a a 60-day public comment period before it moves forward. Marijuana has been classified as a Schedule I drug since the Controlled Substances Act was passed in 1971, putting it in the same category as heroin and meth. The proposed rescheduling would move cannabis to the list of Schedule III drugs.

 

The Vatican Is Holding A Press Conference On Aliens And The Supernatural Today

The Vatican is about to weigh in on aliens. They’re doing a press conference today on “supernatural phenomena” and aliens…and how to deal with potential encounters in the future. It’s not the first time the Vatican has addressed aliens and the supernatural. The last Vatican press conference like this was held in February of 1978.

 

AMERICANS SPEND 2.5 HOURS A DAY “DREAMSCROLLING”

On average we spend about 2.5 hours a day "dreamscrolling"—browsing online for items they may never buy. That adds up to 873 hours, or nearly 36 days a year. Despite the significant time investment, most say it helps them reach financial goals. So how does dreamscrolling help us…smarter money management (56%), reduced impulse buying (30%), and better financial planning (25%). Over half (56%) have items saved in online shopping carts. Popular categories include clothing (49%), tech (30%), and home decor (29%).

Thousands of people are victims of scams and cyber attacks every year, so you’d think that would make everyone be more careful with their own passwords and PIN numbers. But we’re not, many of us are still using common PIN numbers, leaving us vulnerable. An analysis of leaked databases shows that “1234” is still the most common PIN,  “1234” is used more than all of the 42-hundred least-common PINs combined. The second most commonly used PIN is “1111,” followed by “0000,” and “1212,”

Congress Signs Off On Bill Addressing Aircraft Safety And Passenger Refund Rights

Congress gave a thumbs up to a $105-billion bill yesterday that will increase the number of air traffic controllers, add more safety inspectors at aircraft factories, and force airlines to automatically refund passengers whose flights are canceled or delayed for several hours. Airlines are suing the Biden administration to block a new Transportation Department rule on automatic refunds.

 

Vegas' Mirage Casino Is Closing

Another mainstay of the Las Vegas strip is going away. The Mirage hotel-casino will officially close on July 17th but then reopen in 2027 as the Hard Rock Las Vegas. It’s the second time this year that an iconic casino has closed on the strip, with the Tropicana Las Vegas closing last month after 67 years. The Mirage opened for business in 1989.

 

Surprising Time of Year When People Snack More and Workout Less

Daylight saving time might be bad news for your healthy habits. The time of the year when we “spring forward” — setting our clocks ahead by one hour — also marks the time of year when people start consuming more processed foods and stop going to the gym as frequently. Researchers found that people ate more processed foods after daylight saving began — particularly later in the day, and especially on days when the weather was overcast.

 

Electric cooperative seeks information on vandalism

HomeWorks Tri County Electric Cooperative is looking for help in finding those responsible for over $250,000 in damages. The damage to transformers and regulators, happened Clinton, Eaton, and Ionia counties. They’re offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

 

Jill Biden to visit Midland on Friday

First Lady Jill Biden is joining the Women for Biden-Harris statewide tour, and she’ll be visiting Midland tomorrow. Today she’s in Marquette, and will visit Detroit Saturday. This visit marks Biden's return to the Midland area after a previous visit in October 2021.

 

The Best Cities To Start A Career In 2024

College students across the country are  entering the job market for the first time. Where they decide to do that can make a big difference and there are some cities that may make it easier. The CFX Morning Research Team ranked cities across comparing factors including the amount of entry-level jobs, average starting salary, commute time and housing affordability. This year’s best city to start a career is Atlanta, Georgia. Austin, Texas, eighth overall, is number one for Quality of Life. At the bottom of the list is New York City making it the worst city for starting a career.

Up North state park announces free summer concert, adventure series

This summer Ludington State Park's summer entertainment series will offer 22 free programs including concerts, magic shows, and educational events. The lineup features a variety of performances ranging from country to jazz, with guest presenters offering programs on topics like live birds of prey and reptiles. Most events take place at the Ludington State Park Amphitheater. While the programs are free, donations are welcome.

Health department warns of dangers of tick bites

The Central Michigan District Health Department has issued a warning about the an increase in ticks in the area due to mild winter and spring weather conditions. That raises concerns about the transmission of diseases such as Lyme Disease. They’re advising everyone to take precautions to protect themselves and their pets from tick bites. Preventative measures include avoiding tick habitats, using repellents, and conducting regular tick inspections. Prompt removal of ticks and consultation with a physician if symptoms develop are emphasized. Additionally, pet owners are urged to consult veterinarians for tick protection measures.

 

Google And Apple Team To Alert People That They’re Being Tracked

Google and Apple are working together to warn users when they're being tracked by a third party. The companies have unveiled a cross-platform alert system to fight against stalkers and others who might use a Bluetooth location tracker to know where people are or when they are not home. The companies say a software update is coming soon that will alert users with a message that a tracker is moving with them. Apple’s is on iOS17.5 and it will be on Android 6.0 or higher.

 

Fed Chair Says Inflation Remains Higher Than Expected

Yesterday the Feds said they’re not optimistic about the idea of an interest rate cut any time soon. They added that inflation numbers have been higher than anybody expected and that we just need to let restrictive policy do its thing. Interest rates have held between 5.25-to-5.5-percent since July, the highest in around 23 years.

 

Bird Flu Detected In Gratiot, Isabella County Cattle Herds

Avian Influenza has been detected in dairy herds in Gratiot and Isabella counties in mid-Michigan. While most cows don't suffer severe symptoms from the virus, its ability to mutate and spread to other mammals raises concerns. Over 90 million domestic birds have been affected since January 2022, with the virus spreading to skunks, bears, cougars, and sea lions. Biosecurity orders have been issued for dairy operations statewide to prevent further spread and provided guidance on protecting cattle health. Measures include isolating new animals, monitoring health daily, and using disinfectants.

A group of eight TikTok creators joined the legal fight against the new TikTok ban. The petition wants the court to block the law from being enforced. ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, has already filed its own petition to the same court seeking a block on the law.

 

Largest Flare Of This Solar Cycle Mostly Misses Earth

The biggest solar flare in almost two decades erupted from the surface of the sun yesterday. The good news is that the flare shot out from a part of the sun rotating away from Earth, which means we’re not going to get hit. The sun is approaching it’s peak for this solar cycle, so it’s entirely possible that more solar activity could impact the planet this year, and might even give everyone another chance to see the aurora again.

Is a master’s degree worth it…a new study says maybe not. New research says that over 40-percent of master's degrees aren't financially worth getting. They looked at career earnings at graduation and a decade later, and found that over 75-percent of four-year bachelor degrees have a positive ROI (return on investment).

STUDY: PREGNANCY CAN LOWER IQ IN BOYS

Elevated stress levels during late pregnancy can potentially lower boys' IQ scores by age seven. What’s strange is that while higher blood cortisol was associated with lower IQ in boys, girls scored better on cognitive tests when their mothers had increased stress levels during pregnancy.  The scientists explain that while prenatal cortisol exposure is necessary for fetal development, it can affect brain function later in life.

We’re looking at a record number of Memorial Day travelers this year, with 43.8 million planning trips of 50 miles or more. That’s a 4% increase from last year. Driving remains the preferred mode of travel, with 38.4 million expected to hit the road, the highest since tracking began in 2000. Aditionally, 3.51 million people are projected to fly, making it the busiest Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005.

 

ZILLOW: RENTERS NEED TO MAKE $80K TO COMFORTABLY AFFORD TYPICAL U.S. RENTAL

In April, the average monthly rent nationwide rose to nearly $2,000, a 36% increase since 2019. To comfortably afford this, individuals would need an annual income of nearly $80,000, far outpacing the growth of wages. Single-family home rents have also climbed, reaching $2,208 on average.

Canadian wildfire smoke already spreading toward Great Lakes, see it on satellites

Yesterday satellite images showed a white haze of wildfire smoke moving from the Dakotas into Minnesota and Wisconsin, originating largely from wildfires in western Canada. The upper-air flow is carrying this smoke into the Midwest and eventually toward Michigan. Right now in Canada there are 143 active wildfires, with 38 categorized as "out of control." This may signal a challenging wildfire season ahead as rain becomes sparse in Canada during the summer months.

Internet provider gifts generator to village of Edmore

Point Broadband, the folks who hook up the internet, gave Edmore village a backup generator, totally free. This generator sits under the water tower and kicks in during blackouts, making sure the water stays clean and safe. Point Broadband said they're all about working with the community and making life better. The village officials were thankful, knowing it's a big deal for keeping everyone's water safe.

Highly Processed Foods Raise Risk Of Early Death

A new study shows that eating ultra-processed foods is linked to a higher risk of early death. ltra-processed foods are defined as foods with added sugar, sodium, saturated fats, trans fats, and refined carbs, and do not add much fiber. There’s mounting proof that the foods are strongly linked to higher risks of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and bowel cancer.

 

‘Give Local Isabella’ raises $66,000 for local charities

"Give Local Isabella," a day-long fundraising event, raised over $66,000 for 25 charitable organizations in Isabella County. The event saw 241 donors contributing to support local charities. Renaissance Public School Academy, Christian Counseling of Mt. Pleasant, and the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy received the highest donations.

Auroras Expected To Continue This Week Across Much Of The US

Did you see the Northern Lights over the weekend? If not, you may not be out of luck quite yet. Geomagnetic storm activity caused the aurora to spread from the North Pole as far as the deep south, and there were reports of sightings in Germany, Switzerland, China, England, and Spain. The latest forecasts show that the activity from another burst of solar radiation that started arriving at Earth yesterday could keep the aurora visible farther south than usual again tonight.

 

Isabella commissioners approve drone for sheriff

Isabella County commissioners approved Sheriff Michael Main's request to purchase a drone for critical functions such as assisting in fatal crash investigations, locating missing persons, and aiding in finding dangerous suspects. The drone, funded through donations and grants, will be operated by Sgt. Jason Kenney, who is certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. Main highlighted the drone's ability to expedite crash scene mapping, thus reducing road closure times and optimizing first responder resources.

A recent survey shows that spending excessive time indoors leaves many feeling stir-crazy. To combat this, respondents feel they need at least 67 minutes of outdoor time daily, with 57% expressing a heightened desire to be outdoors. Outdoor activities like grilling, hiking, and camping are favored, as they are associated with relaxation, mood improvement, and mental clarity. Since the pandemic, there's been a notable preference for nature-related travel and trips promoting mental well-being.
